Galois Theory for Beginners
I promised my Further Maths class today that I would post a link to an article on Galois Theory. So as promised here it is. It is another one of those weighty challenging articles but it is worth it if you stick with it – honestly.
The maths of a Rubik’s cube

This article seems perfect for my year thirteen Further Mathematics class. It manages to combine Decision Maths with Group Theory; two branches of mathematics that we have been looking at this year. It’s also about the Rubik’s Cube which I know several of them have become a little obsessed with too.
The article is taken from Plus, a website dedicated to explaining “the beauty and practical applications of mathematics”. It has a large back catalogue and is very informative. It can be a little challenging and does not follow the Stephen Hawking’s philosophy of not showing any formulae but if you stick with it the insights make the focus and concentration worthwhile.
